Yes, we can and in fact, we love to do it! We love getting to repurpose an heirloom stone, as it can carry so much sentimental value. If you have old jewelry lying around that you aren’t wearing, let’s use it to make a custom piece! We cannot use the gold or metal in the actual custom piece, but we can offer credit for it and that will count toward your new piece. "Styles change, but diamonds are forever."
The time line can vary depending on availability and design complexity. On average, custom design can take about 4-8 weeks from start to finish. If we are only making small changes to an existing design it can take as little as 2 weeks.
Carat is used to measure the weight of diamonds and gemstones.
Clarity refers to how clear a diamond is and is based on how many inclusions are inside the diamond. Inclusions can include minute crystals, pinpoints, tiny enclosed fractures, etc. Clarity is measured on a scale from IF (internally flawless) to I2. The location of the inclusions play a big role when selecting a diamond.
Color refers to the color of a diamond. The color scale starts at D (colorless) and goes all the way down to Z (noticeable color). However, within the 10 color shades, the eye sees 3 (colorless, near colorless and slightly tinted).
Cut refers to the cut of a diamond and is the most overlooked but possibly the most important! Cut can really make or break the appearance of the stone. If a diamond has excellent proportions, symmetry and angles it is going to have optimal light return and be very sparkly. If a diamond has poor angles, poor symmetry and poor polish, it will appear dull and dark.
Lab grown diamonds are synthetic stones that are manufactured in a lab or factory in the same way other diamond imitations, like cubic zirconia are made. Calling a synthetic manufactured stone a diamond does not make it a diamond.
The diamonds people have valued over hundreds of years come from the earth that were formed by heat and pressure in the earth from carbon as the earth cooled. This cooling of carbon happened a billion + years ago, thus the natural diamond in an engagement ring comes from diamond rough that formed at the beginning of tine. A nice connection to eternity on one's fiancé's hand. In contrast, the lab grown diamond is usually a few weeks or months old. It doesn't say much about eternity and a long future together.
Karat is the unit used to measure the purity of gold. (10k, 14k, 18k, 24k and Platinum)
Carat is used to measure the weight of diamonds and gemstones.
Karat is the unit used to measure the purity of gold. Pure gold is 24k, or 100% gold. 18k contains 75% gold and 14k contains 58.5% gold. The reason alloys get added to gold is to make them strong. 24k is very soft, making it not very ideal for every day wear. Thus, many jewelers opt to work in 14k and 18k which are both very strong.
Platinum: Platinum is a very dense metal, making it almost twice as heavy as gold. It is hypoallergenic, so if you are usually allergic to metals, platinum is your best route.
The sentiment behind your jewelry is priceless, but they can be replaced if they're insured in the event that something happens to them.
An option is to insure your valuables through a company that specializes in jewelry insurance, which might offer more coverage than a standard homeowners or renters policy. Of course, you can always insure with your company of choice.
